Experience
He completed his degree in Dutch Law at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, with a focus on Dutch corporate law and employment law.
During 2006, Matthijs studied International Law at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Matthijs started working as an attorney at law in 2008 VMW Taxand in Amsterdam (before: Van Mens & Wisselink). Matthijs conducted his initial activities within two practice groups (employment law and corporate law) and from 2009 onwards he focusses on employment law and labour law. In 2013, Matthijs graduated from the post doctorate Grotius Academy for Employment Law.
Matthijs is a member of Association Employment Lawyers Netherlands (VAAN – Vereniging Arbeidsrecht Advocaten Nederland) and of Association Employment Lawyers Amsterdam (VAAA – Vereniging Arbeidsrecht Advocaten Amsterdam). Furthermore, Matthijs is a member of the Association International des Jeunes Avocats (AIJA) and the European Employment Lawyers Association (EELA).
Other activities and Publications
Matthijs also regularly gives presentations, in-house training and speaks at seminars in the Netherlands and abroad.
Matthijs has been a board member for 8 years of Pymwymic, a community of investors who believe in the flow of capital to good. “Since 1995, the Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is Community of families, philanthropists and individual investors have helped provide capital to for-profit companies creating positive social impact in the world”.
Matthijs’ past publications include an annual contribution on Dutch labour law to “International Labor & Employment Laws”, an American Bar Association edition.
Registration
Matthijs has registered the following principal (and secondary) legal practice areas in the Netherlands Bar’s register of legal practice areas (rechtsgebiedenregister): employment law.
Based on this registration, he is required to obtain ten training credits per calendar year in each registered principal legal practice area in accordance with the standards set by the Netherlands Bar.
